Last Monday morning, first thing, my laptop, which had been fine when I closed it up the night before, would not even come on. Even after plugging it in and letting it sit all day, hoping I had just really run down the battery, nothing. So I switched over to the old, very, very slow one a friend had given me. Now I need a new laptop. Wednesday evening I went back to that friend, who had promised to advise on the best one for my needs when the time came and then I spent time the next day reviewing what was available and ordering a new machine.
But that was not all Monday haad in store. At the usual time of 9:00 AM the workman who had been AWOL before and had asked for a second chance failed to show. Either unwilling or unable to have a phone. the only way to contact him is a Facebook message. I waited until 9:30 and checked Facebook. At 8:22 a message had been left ” I need to talk to you about work today” There was no apology or explanation. Of course I answered to the effect of “What the heck is going on?” and got off. I had work to do.
I had planned to call Tony the painter to see if he was done with a fencing job he had on. I was forced into immediate action by a power failure in the living room and dining room. The circuit breaker had tripped and would not reset. He called me before I even finished my voicemail. Thankfully he had be planning to come and work anyway. He the work I had planned for the no show and replaced the breaker. We discussed the next steps and he said he’d be back next day.
On Tuesday he came back and took the fill in siding and plywood off and exposed the old bathroom window opening. It was a stressful day for the cats with all the banging and power sawing. It was a stressful day for me guarding that big, tempting exit hole from the cats until my Habitat for Humanity store bargain window was installed. Still, the window was shorter than the original so there was a temporary fix to fill that gap, another spot where cold bleeds in from outdoors.
Then on Wednesday morning, while reheating a cup off coffee the newly replaced breaker failed again. Fortunately, Tony was scheduled to come. The short version was the draw of both the crock pot and the microwave were too much for the breaker. He put in 20 as a temporary measure. I can’t use the microwave in the bedrooms where the computer and the fiber optic internet equipment are drawing and the kitchen has been sans electricity since we had to cut the line to do the structural repairs on the bathroom joists. To stay on the safe side I now have to turn everything else off to use the microwave Still, he managed to finish all the work on the exterior of the window.
The week before Charli and Dolly had been scheduled for wellness exams at the vet but Dolly managed to hide herself and rather than being late or missing Charli’s appointment I took only Charli. I told the vet it might be best if I brought her as a drop off and the vet said Tuesday and Friday were the best days. So of course with the chance to get the window in, Tuesday being sunny, we didn’t go. Friday was raw, dark, raining like mad and cold enough earlier to create ice.. Also a Fedex delivery was coming I had to sign for, so I still have to get poor Dolly to the vet this week, another complication. Considering the poor Fedex driver told me he’d fallen twice, I think I was better off staying in.
With all these fires to put out, as usual the writing suffered, the post scheduling suffered and I feel a bit frustrated. I am determined, however, to focus on what got done and just try to make the best of things. The fact there is only so much I can do in a 24 hour day is inescapable. I won’t let it spoil my Christmas celebrations or discourage me from keeping on.
